About Mae Tao Clinic
Mae Tao Clinic(MTC) is a clinic for Myanmar refugees established in 1989 in the border town of Mae Sot in northwest of Thailand. MTC has been providing free medical care to people who came to Thailand fleeing persecution and oppression by the Myanmar military regime, as well as to people who are unable to receive medical care in Myanmar due to poverty., The number of patients visiting Mae Tao Clinic reaches 150,000 per year. Half of these are people who cross the border because they cannot receive medical care in Myanmar due to poverty or persecution by the military regime, and the other half are immigrants and refugees living in Thailand.
Since the military coup in 2021, the number of patients fleeing from Myanmar to Thailand has been steadily increasing. As the civil war in Myanmar continues to drag on, there has been an increase in patients losing limbs to landmines and those contracting infectious diseases such as malaria while living as refugees in the jungle. Many suffer from trauma and anxiety to their life, and mental health issues are becoming more serious. which means medical needs never decrease but constantly exists. Mae Tao Clinic, a clinic for refugees on the border, is there to support these people and provide medical care.
